How is black sesame kitchen different from a restaurant?
In the realm of dining, we offer event-based communal dining experiences and private room dining.
As such, we do not have small individual tables with flexible reservation times. If your party size is five or fewer, we highly encourage you to book our communal Lunchtime Demo n’ Dine or nightly Wine n’ Dine. Usually small groups of diners book separately and sit together, at two communal tables, each in its own dining room. Because it is a communal experience, we recommend you arrive on time (12noon for Demo n’ Dine; 7pm for Wine n’ Dine) so you and your dining partners may fully enjoy the experience. In the evenings, our courtyard is open to guests as early as 6pm for our Deluxe experience (which includes a dumpling lesson).
We encourage groups of 6 or more to consider our private room dining options (minimum charges apply). We offer more flexibility in start times for private room dining.
Also, unlike a typical restaurant with an a la carte menu, we offer a seasonal ten-course Chinese set menu — which means you leave the stress of ordering to us!
We are able to cook for all kinds of allergies and dietary restrictions. Just let us know when you book!
Why is a 50% deposit required?
We ask for a deposit because we have very limited seating and we offer personalized dining. Cancellations can have a large impact on our operations. We thank you for understanding. You may view our booking and cancellation policies here.
How do we pay the deposit?
You may pay by credit card or WeChat Pay. Once we have confirmed your date is available by email or WeChat, we will send you an invoice with instructions. Please note our credit card payments are processed by PayPal based on a yearly average exchange rate and include a small PayPal service charge.
What is WeChat Pay?
WeChat is an indispensible messaging/payment app used across in China - it’s like WhatsApp but with a payment component called WeChat Pay. You can link a foreign credit card so long as you download WeChat in China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan. (See article here: https://medium.com/shanghaiist/you-can-now-tie-foreign-credit-cards-to-your-wechat-pay-account-f8d282fc2c2)
Once you have downloaded WeChat you can communicate with us by adding us as a contact by using our name: BlackSesameKitchen. Once we accept you, you may transfer the payment. After we receive payment, we will send you a confirmation reply.
Do your prices include tax and tip?
The price includes tax (as all prices in China do), but does not include tip. Tips are never compulsory, but should you wish to give a tip, it would be greatly appreciated and divided among our front and back of the house staff.
Can we bring children?
Yes, we welcome children to any of our events. However, for our communal Wine n’ Dine in our main kitchen, we recommend that they are of an age that allows them to sit on high stools for the entire duration of the meal. (Please specify if you prefer our South Room, with more room and seats lower to the ground. We may grant this based on availability.) Children 12 and under are eligible for a discounted price of 280RMB ($47US) for our Wine n’ Dine. For our Lunchtime Demo n’ Dine, children 12 and under are eligible for a discounted price of 224RMB ($37US). Children may join our Deluxe Wine n’ Dine cooking class + dinner for a discounted price of 350RMB ($60US). We occasionally offer cooking classes for children at a discounted price — please check our events page or our calendar.
